No, it will not float if the boat plug is still inside the Floatsom. Also, your boat will not either.

Can the Floatsom be used to install a live well plug?

Why not use just a 1/2 wrench?

For many reasons, the Floatsom keeps your wrench in your emergency toolbox where it belongs instead of rust-staining the finish of your expensive boat. It also keeps the boat keys with the boat plug and wrench all in one item so it will not get lost. It prevents the boat plug from being overtightened by providing a mechanical advantage over hand tightening but less than a wrench. Also, a quick shake of the Floatsom before the boat key goes into ignition lets you know if you forgot to install the boat plug. And, if you accidentally drop the Floatsom overboard it floats even with keys attached.
